Descriptive Essays Use five senses: sight: sound: smell: taste touch

Personification giving nonhuman objects human qualities: The sea roared and swallowed the ship whole.

Simile A comparison between two things that are different using like or as The old man’s skin looks like a crumpled piece of paper.

Metaphor A direct comparison between two different things. Hint: look for was or is The wind was a whip across my frozen cheeks.

Details Use specific details: The weary man laid his heavy head on the pillow. His sad heart broke as he thought of his faithful companion, Rover, dead and buried in the cold, winter ground.

Transitions Use transition words to show relationships between description and objects: Next to the flowering dogwood tree stood a tall, dark green pine.
