Presentation transcript:

Coronary Circulation Heart needs own blood supply Coronary circulation nourishes the myocardium

Coronary Circulation Coronary arteries branch from base of aorta Fill when heart relaxes Myocardium drained by cardiac veins Empty into coronary sinus on backside of heart Drains into the right atrium

Disorders of the Cardiovascular System Myocardial Infarction- a blood clot forms in one or more arteries of the heart Prevents blood flow and causes the cells to die. (Heart Attack) Angina Pectoris- severe chest pain that occurs when the myocardium is deprived of oxygen. Slide 11.44 Copyright © 2003 Pearson Education, Inc. publishing as Benjamin Cummings

Diagnostic Procedure for Cardiovascular disease Angiogram- a catheter inserted in an artery of leg (groin) or arm Worked into the desired artery Radioactive dye injected into the blood stream Viewed with x-ray machine. Dye makes blood flow visible on x-ray Slide 11.44 Copyright © 2003 Pearson Education, Inc. publishing as Benjamin Cummings

Treatments for the Cardiovascular disease Coronary angioplasty-procedure in which a balloon is used to open a blockage in a coronary artery narrowed by atherosclerosis. (plaque build up on the inner walls of arteries). Coronary bypass surgery- procedure in which veins from the legs are used to bypass the coronary arteries.
