Food Labels

Anticipated Problem How can a person read and interpret food labels correctly? Start at the top & read downward!

Servings Serving size is the first item listed. It is followed by the number of servings per container. The serving size is an acceptable amount for consumption at one time.

Be Careful! The nutrition information that follows the serving size is based on one serving.

How are calories figured out? Calories per gram: Protein 4 Fat 9 Carbohydrate 4 Yes, each gram of fat you consume provides more than twice as many calories as a gram of protein or carbohydrate!

Calories Calories are listed next. Calories are fuel your body uses for energy. Remember: Gasoline for a car : Calories for a human.

Let’s Practice… Protein= 2g Carbs= 18g Fat= 4.5g Math: (2x4)+(18x4)+(4.5x9)= 8 + 72 + 40.5 = 120.5 calories

Daily Values The “% Daily Value” is based on the Daily Value recommendations for essential nutrients and on a 2,000-calorie diet. Made by dietitians who work for the government Each nutrient is listed based on 100 percent of the daily requirements.
