3 Nutrition Food provides the body with energy and stamina to enjoy life to its fullest. A healthy diet is made up of the correct daily amounts of food from the food groups. Every person needs to eat appropriate amounts of food from each of the food groups everyday.

4 Recommended average amounts for middle school aged students Grains- 5-7 oz Vegetables- 1 ½ – 3 cups Fruits- 1 ½ - 2 cups Dairy- 2-3 cups Meats and Beans- 4-6 oz

5 Macronutrients There are three nutrients that provide the body with energy. Carbohydrates Fats Proteins

6 Carbohydrates Preferred (quick) energy source Contain 4 calories per gram Are found in grains, fruits, and vegetables 55% of the calories in a person’s diet should come from carbohydrates.

7 Fats Are the most concentrated source of energy for the body. Contain 9 calories per gram. Help the body with nerve conduction, vitamin absorption, insulation, and organ protection. Are mostly found in dairy, meat, and oils. 30% of the calories in a person’s diet should come from fats.

8 Proteins Are a reserve source of energy when carbohydrate and fat stores are low Contain 4 calories per gram Repair and build the body Are mostly found in meats and beans 15% of the calories in a person’s diet should come from proteins.

9 Vocabulary Diet- The food a person eats everyday. Macronutrients- Nutrients that provide the body with energy Calorie- The unit of measure used to calculate the energy content of food. Daily Amounts- The appropriate amount of food eaten from each food group. Food Label- Nutritional information listed on packaged food.

10 Vocabulary Minerals- Inorganic elements found in foods that the body needs to function properly. Vitamins- Essential substances contained in foods needed for good health.

11 Nutrition Food Card Activity – Practice developing an appropriate meal using the food cards. – Try your best to include all of the recommended daily amounts.

12 Nutrition Food label Work Sheet – Answer the questions based on the information provided in the food label.
