2 Reasons to read a food label:
Weight management Information on servings Percent daily value Food allergy information 2. A list of ingredients on a food label will tell you what is in your food. They appear in descending order by weight.

3 3. A label will also include information on allergens.
4. The eight most common allergens are: Milk products Peanuts Shellfish Wheat Eggs Fish Soy Tree Nuts 5. Serving Size tells you the measurement of one serving. All the nutrients on the label are based on one serving.

4 6. The formula for calculating the serving size with the amount of calories is:
Serving amount x calories or nutrient

5 7. Calories come from from fats, carbs, and protein.
8. What is a % daily value? Tells you what percent of a nutrient that one serving provides. 9. Is fat bad???? 10. What is total fat? Refers to the total fat grams in one serving.

6 11. Certain types of carbohydrates (fiber, sugars) may be listed on the label.
12. This section of vitamins and minerals tells you the percent daily value for A, C, Calcium, and Iron. 13. What is a footnote? Tells you that the daily values come from a recommended 2,000 calorie meal plan.
