PHYSICAL AND AESTHETIC FEATURES BRATISLAVA REGION BRATISLAVA CASTLE TYPE OF SITE It is a castle which is situated in the capital city of Slovakia. The Castle is an important landmark and a National Cultural Monument. PHYSICAL AND AESTHETIC FEATURES The castle is built in a ghotic style. The castle which in the past was controlled by Great Moravia and for almost 200 years stored the crown jewels of Hungary, nowadays hosts many expositions and is an ideal place for walks with beautiful surroundings and views. It serves as a representative venue for the Slovak Parliament and houses collections of the Slovak National Museum. AREA COVERED The castle, yards and gardens cover an area of 69 944 m². HISTORICAL/SCIENTIFIC/ARTISTIC INFORMATION There are four entrance gates to the castle out of which three are currently accessible. A green lawn covers the whole surrounding area. The benches and standing lamps give the park romantic atmosphere. A new baroque garden behind the castle was opened in June 2016. It was reconstructed in order to remind its last baroque stage before the great fire in 1811 occurred, which damaged the castle and its surroundings. The area in front of the Castle carries a name “Yard of Honor”. The main Castle building includes 4 towers. The tallest one, „Crown Tower“, is on the southwest corner and it is an observatory with a beautiful view on the whole Bratislava, Danube and Austria as well. Inside the castle you can find the museum of history, which offers different exhibitions. DATING The castle stands on an important crossroad of the ancient routes. First traces of the settlement on the hill stretch back to the Stone and Bronze Age. The place had its strategic geographical importance in the period of the Great Moravian Empire. The first written reference dates from 907.

CONDITION OF PRESERVATION VISITING TIME BRATISLAVA REGION BRATISLAVA CASTLE CONDITION OF PRESERVATION It is the main tourist attraction and the most significant symbol of Bratislava. It is well preserved because of reconstructions. VISITING TIME In summer season (1.April-31.October) the castle area is open from 10:00 p.m till 6:00 pm except Mondays. In winter season from 9:00 am til 5.00 pm except Mondays. . LEGAL OWNERSHIP It is a national cultural monument - public ownership TICKETS AND BOOKING It is open for public, you only pay for the entrance to the museum. Adults 10 €, students 4 €. First Sunday in the month is free of charge. Guided tour in English must be ordered in advance.

ACCESSIBILITY FACILITIES BRATISLAVA REGION BRATISLAVA CASTLE You can get there by car and public transport or on foot from the city centre - it takes about 15 minutes. It is easily accessible for disabled people. FACILITIES Near the castle there are restaurants, pubs, toilets and souvenir shops.
