The city offers a lot of historic attractions, of which York Minster is the most prominent. The Minster is also known as St Peter's. It is one of the largest cathedrals in Northern Europe. The present cathedral was built in the Gothic style in the 13th century.

York Castle was built of wood by the Vikings but later it was ruined. The oldest remaining part is Clifford's Tower.

The National Railway Museum has a big variety of trains dating from 1820 to the present day. There are old steam trains, comfortable Edwardian carriages, Royal Trains (including carriages used by Queen Victoria). Mini train rides, model railways and a great outdoor play area provide interest for children.

A walk along York's city walls leaves a lasting impression of this beautiful city. The walls were built in the 14th century, and they are 3 mi in length.

One of York's biggest tourist attractions is the Shambles, a narrow 14th century street. It was known for its butcher shops and stalls in the past but now you can find a lot of cafes and boutiques there.

The Jorvik Viking Centre shows the life of the Vikings in the 9th century York. The site includes reconstructions of Viking houses and medieval workshops. People like it because they can dress up and play at being Vikings.
