A Section Leaders Guide to Explorer Young Leaders

Explorer Young Leaders This is a brief introduction to the Explorer Young Leader Scheme, to explain the scheme, what it is all about, the rewards and your commitment as a section leader. Not every section will have a requirement for a YL but the option should be seriously considered.

What/Who Are YL’s ? They are the Scout Leaders of the Future. Explorer Scouts or DOE volunteer 14 – 17.99 Years Old Registered with a District Explorer Unit Invested if an Explorer Scout Wear Uniform if an Explorer Scout Help in Beaver Colonies, Cub Packs or Scout Troops They are the Scout Leaders of the Future. Without Adult Leaders there is no Scouting !

What Do They Do? Opportunity to Join In with Other Scout Units Meet as a Separate YL Unit for regular training modules. Take Part in Progressive Training Gain Platinum & Diamond Chief Scout’s Awards Work Towards the Queen’s Scout Award Gain Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards

What is ‘Special’ About Them ? It is a commitment to Specific Leadership Training. It counts towards their adult leadership training. Module A, is Compulsory within 3 months Modules B – K & Missions 1 – 4, Optional

It is impressive on their CV and sets them apart from others Some Groups will ( should in my opinion ) pay the yearly Scout Capitation Fee.

What Do You Section Leaders Need To Do for YL’s ? Support Them ! Have a partnership agreement Do remember that they are a Young Person Do Not allow them Unsupervised Access Do give them Responsibility Do include them in your program planning and program delivery Be Prepared to Step In YL’s are not there to make up the numbers or just do the washing up !

Is It Worth All The Effort ? Benefits for you Section Leaders: An extra pair of hands to deliver an exciting program. New ideas. They may be from a different group with a different approach and views. A Young role model for your young people to look up to. 45 % of YL’s will go on to become adult Leaders. This is your opportunity to promote your Section and Group and help safeguard the future.

Explorer Scout Young Leaders. The Leaders of the Future “Leaders are people who keep their promises. If you say you are going to do something, then do IT.” Bear Grylls “A Leader must have a cheery, energetic personality, with sympathy and the understanding of his followers.” Lord Baden-Powell

The End If you have any questions about having a YL in your team now is the time to contact me and ask. Do please seriously consider offering a place to a YL. They will be a huge benefit when fully included in your section. It is a big commitment of time and effort from the YL so we must all ensure that it is both rewarding and beneficial to all.
