The Civil War and American Life By: Kaley Peterson and Josh Sims Section 4 The Civil War and American Life By: Kaley Peterson and Josh Sims

Divisions Over the War North South Emancipation Proclamation Copperheads vs. Republicans Georgia and North Carolina didn’t fully support secession Strong support for states rights and big confederate government

Dealing With Disruptions Both sides tried to sabotage the war Helped prisoners escape Prevented men from volunteering for war Lincoln and Davis outlawed Habeas Corpus 1300 people in the North were imprisoned as a result

The Draft Laws Desertion was a problem 300,000+ soldiers on both sides deserted to go home Most returned after harvest/planting Each side then started a draft system Law required anyone between 18 and 35 to serve for three years Wealthy people escaped having to fight Payouts of $300 to escape a war (about $8000 dollars today) Mobs in Ney York City protested the draft

The War and Economic Strain Northern industries boomed during war Constant shortage of workers because of the draft Union printed $400,000,000 to pay expenses This caused inflation First income tax to pay for the war Prices on goods went up by %80 Because of the shortage goods were much more expensive The Union blockade prevented the South from being able to sell cotton over seas so they were unable to raise money A pound of beef went from 12 cents to $8 The Union destroyed the farmlands and crops in the South which made them struggle even more. The slaves got less then the little they were given before the war and often the confederate soldiers would take from them

Women in the Civil War Women on both sides contributed to the war in more then one way. At least 400 women dressed up as men and helped serve in the war. Or they would often become spies and reveal one or the others plans. Many ,many men were drafted and to the armies and they often owned a business or a farm of their own and when they left the women would take over and help to the work back at home Some would work in factories and others began doing more dangerous but useful jobs such as making ammunition
