10. Summary The Civil War had an enormous impact on the lives of Americans in both the North and South. Each side dealt with tension between those who supported the war and those who opposed it. Both also had to resort to a draft due to high casualties and the growing unpopularity of the war. The wealthy were able to get out of the draft which lead to the war being dubbed “a poor man’s fight.” In the North prices rose 80% and industry boomed due to the high demand of war materials while the blockade took a huge toll on the Southern economy causing shortages and massive inflation. On the positive side the war brought new opportunities for women as many had to take over farms or businesses while new industries, such as nursing and teaching, were opened up to women for the first time.
