ANCIENT GREEK PHILOSOPHERS: SOCRATES 470-399 B.C.E Philosophy: The study of knowledge, reality, and existence. Ancient Athens was the Greek center of education. One of the focuses of education in Athens was philosophy. Socrates was one of the greatest philosophy teachers of his time. The young people of Athens liked the teaching style and fundamental beliefs of Socrates. The Athenian powers however did not and his enemies brought him to trial. Socrates was found guilty of his accused crimes and sentenced to death by drinking a poison called Hemlock.

KEY QUESTIONS FOR TODAY’S LESSON: 1) What were the fundamental beliefs of Socrates? Why was Socrates sentenced to death? Was his death justified? (should he have been executed?)

Socrates taught his students to question certain beliefs that were thought to be completely true. His method of teaching and questions was known as the Socratic Method. The Socratic Method is a series of questions designed to lead a person to question their belief system. His enemies believed that Socrates’ teaching style was leading young Athenians to rebel against authority.
