“The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me” Sherman Alexie

As You Read Highlight at least 5 sentences. For each highlight, write a note in the margin. (Consult your “What do I Write in the Margin” handout).

In Your Journal In Writing Practice/Reader Response, thoughtfully complete the following tasks: Pick ONE quote from the reading that is important to understanding the author’s point. Copy down the quote, including the page number that it is found on. Write a paragraph response (4-6 sentences) that explains what the quote tells us about the author. Explain why you picked the quote. Using evidence from the text, write a paragraph response (4-6 sentences) that summarizes the author’s attitude about the importance of reading.

Challenge (A-level): Read “Learning to Read” by Malcolm X and complete the following task in your journal: Pick ONE quote from the reading that is important to understanding the author’s point. Copy down the quote, including the page number that it is found on. Write a paragraph response (4-6 sentences) that explains what the quote tells us about the author. Explain why you picked the quote. Using evidence from the texts, compare and contrast the two essays. On a separate sheet of paper. Write a page that explains the differences and similarities between the author’s attitudes towards reading.
