1 Go find a poem you like, and bring in one copy to class on Monday.
HOMEWORK Go find a poem you like, and bring in one copy to class on Monday.

2 Your Favorite Poem Homework from the weekend: Last Friday you turned in your final copy of your essay, with the draft and peer edits. If you still need to turn in anything make sure it goes in the assignment box. Today you’ll need your poem of choice, as well as a partner. Find at least one other person to work with and sit side by side.

3 Without your partner: Why did you pick this poem?
On your own sheet of paper that will be turned in by the end of the period, answer these questions about your poem. Why did you pick this poem? What do you like specifically about this poem? How did you find this poem (i.e. in the class, mom used to read it to you, etc.)? What do you think this poem is about? Can you connect to the meaning of this poem on a personal level? Explain.

4 With your partner: With your partner complete the following on your own sheet of paper. Staple your poem to the back of this work and submit by the end of the period. Swap poems momentarily to read each others, but answer these questions about your own poem, on your own sheet of paper. What makes this a poem. Be specific. What specifically qualifies this as a poem? Highlight/underline/mark on the poem what literary devices are being used. Make sure to identify what you mean (i.e. yellow highlighting = metaphors)? What qualifies something as a poem? If you were to write a poem of a similar style to your favorite, what are the things you’d need to know how to do, to write something close?
