2 On-Level Independent Reading Main Course

3 Characterization Menu Main Course
A character sketch is a description of the personality of a character in a literary work. The author can directly tell the reader about the character or indirectly tell the reader about the personality of a character through the character SPEECH THOUGHTS EFFECT ON OTHERS ACTIONS LOOKS

4 Your Job: Choose one attribute or characteristic of the main character in your novel and write an 8-sentence paragraph explaining how the author uses indirect characterization to convey that characteristic. You must have two correctly embedded quotations from your novel. These will be the “concrete details” that you are used to writing.

5 Format Correctly type (MLA style) and double space your essay using 12 Times New Roman font. 8 Sentence Format MLA Heading Creative Title Punctuation and Grammar DUE FRIDAY

9 Organizing Your Body Paragraph: Quote
List the first quote from your brainstorming page that provides PROOF of the personality of your character: *PUT QUOTATION MARKS AROUND THE QUOTE *MUST PROPERLY EMBED QUOTATION (PAGE #) The boys “obeyed the summons of the conch” because Ralph “blew it,” and “was big enough to be a link with the adult world of authority”(59).

10 Explain WHY the quote shows the personality
This is like the commentary portion of an essay. This shows that Ralph is a leader. When he blew the conch, all the little ones came and sat down next to him. It was like they were obeying his orders. The quote discusses the fact that he has an adult authority, which often means leadership qualities.

11 ANOTHER QUOTE Another example is Ralph’s leadership is …

Organizing Your Body Paragraph, Shaping the Paragraph, and the Rough Draft— due at the end of class tomorrow Final typed copy and the packet—due at the end of class Friday You will show me each one before preceding to next step. Rubrics still being used. If I have to ask you to put your phone up, it is 25 points off on the rubric for that day every time I ask.

15 Rough Draft Sheets If you did not show me your brainstorming sheet, please do that before preceding to the Organizing Your Body Paragraph sheet. Your Topic Sentence should include the following: The title of the book (in italics when typed) The author’s name Your character’s name The personality trait you are discussing in your paragraph

16 Evidence and Commentary
Make sure to embed your quote. Do not just put the quote in by itself; it needs context using your own words. Make sure your quotes proves your character’s personality trait. In your commentary, explain why your quote specifically displays that personality trait. Use at least 2 sentences to do this.
