Homework: Finish the reading from today’s class and complete the active reading assignment (if not completed during class time)

3. Bellwork 10/21/13 What’s your relationship like with reading?
When do you do it? Why do you/don’t you read as much as you do?
What memories about reading (in classes or on your own) stand out to you?
What do you gain from reading?
Do you like the smell of books, and/or do you appreciate a long afternoon spent in a quiet bookstore? (hee hee…you don’t really have to answer this one…but do if you want to!) 

5. The two approaches to reading:
Reading is primarily a personal experience that is done mostly for fun and/or relaxation
A book “means” whatever it means to every individual- no interpretation is incorrect
Reading is primarily an opportunity to learn by analyzing and studying the content of the book
A book has a defined meaning, but that meaning can vary depending on how it is studied

6. “Why Read Literature?” Read the essay! At the bottom,
Using the language of the author of this essay, write 2-3 sentences explaining why you read literature. Explain your thinking behind choosing that reason.

7. “The Problem of Meaning”
Read this. It’s a bit challenging…read it slowly, and re-read it when needed!
After each section of text, summarize by writing 1- 2 sentences explaining what point the author is trying to make here
Highlight or underline lines and words that are unclear
Ask questions in the margins of the paper when you’re not sure about something
If you don’t finish in class today, it’s homework that’s due at the beginning of class tomorrow!
