Nutri-Cereals Sorghum (Jowar),Bajra, Finger Millets(Ragi/Mandua) and Minor Millets Foxtail millets (Kangani/kakun) Proso millet (Cheena) Kodo Millet (Kodo) Barnyard millet (Sanwa/Jhangora) Little millet (Kutki) Pseudo Millets (Buck wheat-kuttu, Ameranthus-chaulai) are termed as Nutri-Cereals for production, consumption and trade point of view by Gazette Notification issued on 13-4-2018.

Nutri-Cereals (Millets) Sorghum is the fourth most important food-grain in India after rice, wheat, and maize in terms of area and production. Finger millet (ragi) also forms a major part of the food basket in some states like Karnataka, Telangana and Uttarakhand. Other minor millets are also being cultivated in varying scales in various parts of the country, mainly by tribal & marginal farmers.

Objectives of Sub Mission on Nutri-Cereals Sub-Mission on Nutri Cereals under NFSM started with an outlay of Rs.300.00 crores for 2018-19. The objectives are: Development strategy for addressing issues concerning production, demand, and research with market oriented approach. Increasing production of Nutri-Cereals through area expansion and productivity enhancement in a sustainable manner in the identified districts of the country. Strengthening seed supply system of Nutri-Cereals. Enhancing post-harvest value addition at farm gate for better price realization to farmers through efficient market linkages. Central Govt. hereby declare Millets as Nutri Cereals vide

National Year of Millets - 2018 Activities proposed: Trainings & Capacity Building Activities . Enhancing Demand and Awareness. Fairs, Exhibitions, Fests and Campaigns . National level ‘eat millets campaign’. Documentary films, publications, millet kitchen carts. Road Shows, Cultural events and Millet campaign. Seminar/symposium/workshop at district / state / national level. Value Chain Integration and Millet Entrepreneurship.

Strategy adopted Focus on low productivity and high potential districts. Implementation of cropping system centric interventions. Agro-climatic zone wise planning. Promotion and extension of improved technologies. Processing clusters and value addition at farm level. Creating awareness about the nutritional and health benefits. Creation of marketing infrastructure. Close monitoring of flow of funds. Integration of various proposed interventions. Constant monitoring and concurrent evaluation.

Front Line Demonstration (FLDs) / Cluster Front Line Demonstrations (CFLDs) through ICAR/KVKs/SAUs/State Govts. Need Based Inputs Breeder Seed Production through ICAR/SAUs. Creation of Seed Hubs . Supply of Seed Minikits free of cost to the farmers. Value Chain integration of small producers Federating Farmer Producer Organizations through SFAC. Creation of Millet Processing facilities in FPOs.

Interventions Proposed Research Support Collaborative Research and Development. Increasing shelf life of Nutri-Cereals. Policy and Price Interventions MSP for Small Millets Procurement policies Inclusion of Millets in government programs / schemes

Way forward Introduction of all millets under PDS scheme, which will create huge demand. This will give a boost to the production of all the millets and consequently, it will add to the existing income of the farmers. Assured procurement support with competitive prices to encourage diversification of areas. Providing financial assistance to millets growing states under Mission Mode Program to enhance production and productivity. Through Deptt. of Food & Public Distribution (DFPD), State Governments are allowed to procure Jowar, Bajra, Maize & Ragi etc. from farmers at MSP.
