What Research Says About Reading
Presentation transcript:

Parent Teacher Conferences Library Library started a few weeks ago. We will be visiting the library on Thursdays and checking books out. Library books are due back on Wednesdays. If your student does not return their library book on Wednesday they will not be allowed to check out a new book on Thursday. Starting Tuesday I will ask students if they are ready to turn their library book in. I will collect them in the classroom but soon they will turn them in independently as part of their morning routine on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Halloween We will be celebrating with cider and donuts in our classroom before we begin our parade. Family members and siblings are welcome to join in the fun! We will begin with snack in our room at 10 and then begin the parade around 10:30  Parent Teacher Conferences We will be holding conferences the evening of November 7th and 8th. Please follow the link below to sign-up for your time. These are 15 minutes conferences to discuss your student’s academic, behavior and social development. Students may come if necessary. There will be books and coloring pages for them to work on while we meet. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0E4FAEAF2DAAF49-parent Donations Our classroom will be accepting pumpkin donations over the next two weeks. We will have a week of pumpkin study and activities October 15-19. Pumpkins of any shape and size are welcome .

Readers Workshop Math Writers Workshop Phonics and Handwriting and Sight Words Focus Letters: Cc, Oo, Aa, Gg, Dd, Ss, Ee, Rr, Pp, Jj Sight Words: my, am, go, like We will identify, write and say the sound for all the letters we have worked on and the new letters of the month. Sight words are coming home. Please add these to your sight word ring and practice them daily  If you’re looking for fun things to do in the car or on a rainy day, work on rhyming or syllables! These are skills we will continue to work on this month as well!! Readers Workshop We have been working on our reading stamina. We try to read independently for longer and longer amounts of time each day. We are up to 8 minutes consistently and looking to get all the way to 20 minutes by the end of the month! As readers we choose our books and make a plan for reading using our reading mats. This helps us to focus on one book at a time. We will continue using these skills for the duration of the school year. Partnership Power is strong! When we read together we get better and stronger. Having conversations about books, looking for words we know and reading like a story teller are all parts of partner reading time. We will be working on a variety of reading skills this month, the importance of rereading, using the pictures to guide the story, looking at the characters actions and expressions, acting out parts of a story, looking for words we know and making predictions about what we think is going to happen next. These are all foundational reading skills you can also work on at home while reading together! Math We have mastered 2D and 3D shapes. We know what they are and their characteristics. Ask me to pick out shapes around home (can = cylinder, ball = sphere, party hat = cone)! We will begin working on numbers 0-5 and positional words this month. We will learn to read, write and count objects in groups! Writers Workshop This month we will be putting our Small Moments into sketches and words on paper! This is a very demanding skill and activity. It is a multi step process 1) Think of a story, 2) Picture it in your mind, 3) Say it to yourself/maybe a partner using your story hand, 4) sketch/draw it across 3 pages, 4) add your labels and words. Please make sure to ask your students about their small moment writing time. They should be able to tell you using their hand as a guide, (thumb = beginning, three middle fingers = middle, pinkie = end).

Odds and Ends Please be respectful of morning drop off time, students can enter their classroom at 8:40, no earlier please. Make sure your student is bringing a snack from home everyday. Orange folders should be returning to school every day. Odds and Ends Notes and money should stay in the orange folder for me to remove. Students should not be handing money or notes to me in the morning. Any money that comes to school needs to be in an envelope or baggie with your students name and what the money is for. Please notify the office for any day of transportation changes if you did not send in a note. Upcoming Events 10/5- Raider Day Clothing 10/9- Walking Field Trip Fire Station 10/23- Wear Orange Day 10/24- Early Release Key-Lore Farm Field Trip 10/31- Half Day Halloween Celebration 11/7 and 11/8- Parent Teacher Conferences Field Trips We will be going on 2 field trips this month! Parents are more than welcome to attend both, one or even partial! If you have any questions about this please do not hesitate to contact me  Permission slips must be turned in by the deadline in order for your student to participate.
