SEVEN HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE TEENS HABIT 5: SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD

THE DEEPEST NEED OF THE HUMAN HEART Definition: Communication “…listen first, talk second. Sean Covey, Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Page 165 Deepest need of the human heart is to be understood People won’t express their soft centers unless they feel genuine love and understanding.

5 POOR LISTENING SKILLS Spacing out: Pretend Listening: When someone is talking to us but we ignore them because our mind is wandering off in another galaxy. Pretend Listening: We still aren’t paying attention to the other person, but we pretend we are by making insightful comments at key junctures, such as “yeah,” “uh-huh,” or “cool.” Selective Listening: We pay attention only to the part of the conversation that interests us.

5 POOR LISTENING SKILLS - CONTINUED Word Listening: We actually pay attention to what someone is saying, but we listen only to the words, not to the body language, the feelings, or the true meaning behind the words. Self-centered Listening: We see everything from our own point of view.

GENUINE LISTENING Listen with your eyes, heart, and ears: Only 7% of communication is contained in the words we use. The rest comes from body language (53%) and how we say words , or the tone and feeling reflected in our voice (40%). Stand in their shoes: You must try to see the world as they see it and try to feel as they feel. Practice mirroring: Repeat back in your own words what the other person is saying and feeling.

COMMUNICATING WITH PARENTS If you want to improve your relationship with Mom or Dad, try listening to them, just like you would a friend. If you take time to understand and listen to your parents, two incredible things will happen: You’ll gain a greater respect for them You’ll get your way much more often If you they feel you understand them, they’ll be more willing to listen to you, they’ll be more flexible, and trust you more.
