Informal assessments are checked for understanding and will not receive a grade. Formal assessments will either be graded or receive a rubric score. Students will have the opportunity to fix formal assessments where they score a 69% D+, or lower. Fixed assessments will receive an adjusted score, not to exceed 70% C-. GRADES

Math: Using the Bridges math program, students will demonstrate math reasoning through rich tasks and multiple strategies. Finding the “right” solution is no longer enough. Students must be able to defend their procedure and solution using verbal descriptions, manipulatives, and writing. Students will practice foundational math skills with the use of Xtra Math, math games and apps, and math centers. Parent letters detailing the unit of study and ways to help at home are available on our class website. *Students will be assessed informally through class discussions, journals, and demonstrations; formally through quizzes, tests, and investigations.* This is the back of flap 1 in your flip book. TOP of 2. Journeys: Our Reading book is available online! Due to this, Journeys books will not be allowed to leave the classroom. Your child will have received a letter home that details his/ her login information. Please keep this in a safe place! Logging in: Access your child’s Office 365 account by entering their 10- digit student ID and password. (This is the same information as Second Grade.) Click the waffle (grouping of squares) at the top left hand corner. Select “All Apps”. Select Journeys. Refer to your child’s Agenda to know which Lesson we are currently on. Journeys also offers a FREE app. (These instructions were included with the letter that came home, or Google “HMH player.”) This is flap 4 of your flip book. Page 4, Flap 4 Links & Log-ins

*Chapter questions, tests, and projects will be graded.* This is the back of flap 3 in your flip book. TOP of 4. Moby Max: Moby's adaptive curriculum covers all subject areas and creates a unique, individualized education plan for each student. COMPUTER INSTRUCTIONS • Visit www.mobymax.com/signin • Enter Cheyenne and click our school • Username is student’s first letter of first name and entire last name (example: stuttle) • Password: abc Xtra Math: A wonderful FREE site for practicing multiplication fluency. While we won’t begin Timed Tests until the Second Trimester, it is never too early to get your child started! Your child will have received a letter with his/ her login information. An app is also available for purchase. SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB Online Ordering: Orders are due the 3rd Thursday of every month by 11:59 PM. Visit www.clubs.Scholastic.com CODE: GR9QQ Page 5, Flap 2 This is flap 2 in your flip book. Science: Science objectives will be taught through the use of hands- on activities and class discussion. Class discussion drives the instruction, so there is very little that can be sent home in the event of illness or vacation. It will be very important that your child is in class so s/he is not missing out on valuable instruction. * Grades will be given for participation, Journal Jots, and Unit Assessment. *   Social Studies: Using the Meet Michigan text as our primary guide, the students will learn about Michigan’s history up to its statehood. Projects will also help students master the necessary objectives. *Chapter questions, tests, and projects will be graded.* Math & Sciences

Reading: The standards will be taught through Journeys, a balanced literacy program . This includes phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, To bring a greater depth of understanding to their reading, children will read paired nonfiction/ fiction from literature, novels, and articles. *Reading will be assessed through teacher observation and Journeys assessments.* Writing: Writing and Grammar instruction is integrated within our ELA series. The primary focus will be on the 6 +1 Traits of Writing. These traits are: organization, voice, word choice, ideas, sentence fluency, conventions, and presentation. Students will be responsible for the following writing genres: opinion, expository, fiction, and narrative. Writing will also take place across the entire 3rd grade curriculum. * Writing is assessed on a weekly basis, with a formal piece assessed at the end of each Journeys unit.*   This is the back of flap 2 of your flip book. TOP of 3. Page 6, Flap 3 This is flap 3 of your flip book. Handwriting: Students will be taught a new form of cursive with a program called Handwriting Without Tears. This cursive is likely to be slightly different from what you are familiar with.   Word Study: The students will be instructed in Word Study, as laid out in the Journeys program. Word Study focuses on teaching children the rules and patterns of spelling as opposed to memorizing a set list of words. *Tests are not given for Word Study. Students are expected to apply the spelling rules and patterns in their daily work. This then gets factored in as a part of their Writing Conventions score.* English Language Arts
