4 Classroom Guidelines S.T.A.R.S Behavior! (Safe, Trustworthy,
Attitude, Respect, Success) I will: * be a good listener. *keep my hands to myself. *respect others. *take care of classroom supplies and materials. *try my best.

5 Handwriting In 1st grade, students are expected to use print throughout the school year. Trails West uses the Zaner-Bloser (ball and stick) style of handwriting. It is important for students to learn and use correct formation of letters.

6 Writing Writing is a critical part of a balanced literacy program. Our Writer’s Workshop begins with a mini-lesson focusing on a specific skill or strategy. Ultimately, we want all children to see themselves as authors. Words Their Way- is word study for phonics, vocabulary and spelling instruction. It involves doing things with words like examining, manipulating, comparing and categorizing. It offers students the opportunity to make their own discoveries about how words work!

7 Literacy READING Daily Reading
Reading is an immensely important part of our day. Children will be instructed in all genres from fantasy to realistic fiction, nonfiction and expository text. Students will be reading more texts that provide facts and background knowledge in areas including Social Studies and Science. Daily Reading Each night, students are encouraged to read a book of his or her choice at home. Students are required to read for a minimum of 15 minutes, four nights a week. Daily reading is a time for reading strategies and comprehension skills to be practiced and for students to enjoy reading.

8 Bridges in Mathematics
In Math, students will be using Bridges in Mathematics, a comprehensive curriculum for grades K-5. The rigorous curriculum is designed to address math standards with focus on addition and subtraction, place value, and shapes. Students will gain a deep understanding of math concepts, proficiency with key skills, and the ability to solve new and complex problems.

9 Science & Social Studies
Correlates with the Cherry Creek College and Career Framework. Units are integrated within core subject areas. Students will be provided with many opportunities to become actively engaged in learning through hands-on activities, experiments, and field trips.
