AVID 8 Classroom Expectations Dear Parents and Students: Miss Stacy Bush Canyon Lake Middle School 2016-2017 School Year AVID 8 “ Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” –Nelson Mandela Classroom Expectations Be respectful to all. Come to class prepared. Use your time wisely. Listen and follow directions. Do your best! Think positive and be supportive of one another. Have fun! Dear Parents and Students: Welcome to AVID 8! My name is Miss Stacy Bush, and I will be your AVID elective teacher this year. I am so excited you have chosen to be a part of the AVID family! AVID is an acronym that stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. This is a college preparatory course, designed to help students learn strategies to succeed in rigorous courses, gain confidence, teach organization, and help address any confusion or difficulty in core content classes through tutorials with guidance and support. We will also be spending time becoming familiar with the A-G requirements to be taken in high school, being exposed to different colleges and career options, and many other exciting topics. What do I get if I follow class rules? Your appropriate behavior in class assures everyone of an environment conducive to learning. Some possible rewards for continuous appropriate behavior are: behavior points, intrinsic value (satisfaction of learning), improved skills, verbal praise, positive note to parents, tangible trinkets, and special class activities, privileges, or passes. For instance, I allow the use of headphones and music when expectations are met during student time. Now that you have been selected to participate in the AVID elective program, you will be viewed as a role model, an exceptional student, and leader to all your peers! This means your behavior is expected to be appropriate. Daily Supplies 2-3 inch binder to use for all subjects Pencils- lots of pencils! Pens- blue, black, and red Highlighters Loose-leaf paper Subject dividers with NO pockets 1 ruler Pouch to put supplies Other Highly Recommended Supplies Clear cover sheets Glue Scissors Crayons/markers/colored pencils *If you cannot get materials, please see me so I can help!  What are the consequences if I don’t follow class rules? 1. Warning: the teacher provides a verbal reprimand/reminder. 2. Demerits: a mark recorded for poor choices. Students get 10 behavior points a week (2 per day). If warning does not eliminate behavior, student will lose behavior point. Parent may be contacted. 3. Lunch/Break Detention: short time spent during lunch or break to contemplate conduct. Behavior reflection essay may be assigned. 4. Referral to Administration: a student will be immediately referred to administration for severe behavior problems. Where do I go to find agendas and assignments? AVID students MUST use their CLMS planner every day in all classes. The agenda for the class is always displayed on the screen or white board as students enter the classroom. It also includes homework. This enforces a #NoExcuses policy. In my classroom, students can always find TRFs, handouts, and Binder Check rubrics in the absent work corner.

Stacy.Bush@leusd.k12.ca. us CONTACT INFORMATION Stacy.Bush@leusd.k12.ca. us Miss Stacy Bush 951-244-2123   How will I check my grade in class? AVID students will be required to monitor their grades regularly. Parents are also strongly encouraged to check JUPITER GRADES on a weekly basis to view the most current grades for EVERY class. If you need assistance with logging on to Jupiter Grades, please contact me at Stacy.Bush@leusd.k12.ca.us Absent Work Corner What do I do if I am absent? It is 100% the student’s responsibility to retrieve any absent work. He or she should check the “absent work” corner in my classroom, ask a classmate, and/or come to me before or after school, at lunch or break, or during student time during class. Students have one full week (7 days) from the day they return to turn in absent work. If a student needs more time, he or she must contact me before the 7th day to work out an alternative plan. Late Work Policy I do not accept work after the due date. Students are required to submit work on due dates. If a student does not complete their TRF when assigned, they will receive a zero on the TRF, but still be able to participate in the tutorial.
