Lesson 1 - Appearance

Lesson 1 – Appearance Objectives: Learn the importance of maintaining a professional appearance Describe appropriate dress Manage personal care

Dress codes and appropriate dress vary based on the type of job.

Discussion Does the school have a dress code? How is the school’s dress code the same or different than a workplace? This activity would work best if students are given a copy of the school dress code to reference.

Activity Let’s go shopping! Give students one or more job titles. Examples include: bank teller, retail associate, hair stylist, IT/technical support, child care professional, etc. Have the research on the web for clothing that they would find appropriate for the particular job. If accessing these websites is problematic, an alternate would be to have them clip clothing out of the advertisements in the Sunday paper. They can work in groups, or individually. You could even have them create a poster or PowerPoint presenation of their findings.

Personal Care Appearance is not just limited to clothes, but also includes body art and personal care. Guidelines on body art and personal care often depend on the position, employer, and industry. Employers often addresses body art and piercings in their dress code policy.

Tattoos For centuries, tattooing has been practiced by many different cultures throughout the world. Tattoos are sometimes part of cultural, religious or spiritual practices. Many people have very strong feelings about tattoos. Remember that despite your personal viewpoints, you must be respectful of other team members in your workplace. Various factors, including meaning, visibility, and future job concerns should be considered if you should decide to get a tattoo.

Piercings Reasons for piercings are greatly varied, ranging from personal aesthetic preference to cultural, spiritual, or religious adornment. Many people have strong feelings about piercings. As with tattoos, you must remember to be respectful of other team members in your workplace. Various factors, including placement and future job concerns should be considered if you should decide to get a piercing.

Sometimes physical care has to adjust based on the career. Includes: Showering daily Brushing teeth Wearing deodorant Keeping fingernails maintained and clean Keeping cologne or perfume light Washing and neatly styling hair For women: Keeping makeup light For men: Keeping facial hair neat and well maintained

Includes both treating and preventing health problems. Good Health Includes both treating and preventing health problems. 6 main principles for maintaining good health: Nutrition Activity Sleep Stress management Posture Avoid harmful substances
