1 Professional Attire Salem High School Career Technical Programs

2 Why is dressing professionally important? We all live in different communities and are born into different cultures, which are often reflected in the clothing we wear. When you leave your community or culture group, others may identify you as being different.

3 Why is dressing professionally important? A business is a "culture" in itself. When you work for that business, you become a part of that culture, and you are expected to reflect the values of that business. A potential employer seeks individuals who have needed skills, are dependable, and enthusiastic. She also seeks someone who will represent the values of the business. Potential employers are concerned about whether or not you will "fit in" with the culture of their company.

4 When seeking employment you may need to alter your appearance to match the values of the company where you’d like to work. Why is dressing professionally important?

5 Formal Business Attire for Women A conservatively colored suit (jacket and skirt or jacket and pants) in navy, gray, black, or khaki. White or light pastel blouse made from cotton or silk. Basic pump shoes with 1” – 2” heel. Simple accessories and no visible body piercings or tattoos. Conservative make-up and minimal perfume.

6 Casual Business Attire for Women Conservatively colored pants. Conservatively colored coordinating top, with or without a collar, made from cotton. Low heel or flats. Simple accessories and no visible body piercings or tattoos. Conservative make-up and minimal perfume.

7 Formal Business Attire for Men A conservatively colored (navy, gray, black, or brown) suit with 2 or 3 buttons. White or light colored, long sleeve, cotton shirt with an undershirt. Coordinating tie with a simple pattern or solid color. Avoid bow ties for interviews. Black or dark brown polished shoes. Watch only and no visible body piercings or tattoos. Minimal cologne.

8 Casual Business Attire for Men Conservatively colored (navy, gray, black, or brown) pressed pants. White or light colored, long or short sleeved, cotton shirt with a collar and an undershirt. Casual shoes, but no sneakers. Watch only and no visible body piercings or tattoos. Minimal cologne.

9 General Information Grooming... Always present yourself at your best! Carry a nice portfolio folder (leather if possible) with blank paper and a pencil for taking notes. Be on time, which means at least 5 minutes early, for any appointment.
