CfE Higher English Course Outline

Higher English Pupils who wish to undertake the Higher English Course would normally be expected to have attained one of the following: National 5 English Higher English develops the skills taught in National 5.

Higher English Internal Assessment (UASPs) Two Units: Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation (Reading and Listening) Creation and Production (Writing and Talking)

Internal Assessment There are 4 assessments. These are assessed by your teacher on a pass/fail basis. You must pass them ALL to gain a full award. You are permitted a second attempt – a third - only in EXCEPTIONAL circumstances.

Course Assessment The Exam Paper 1 Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation (30 marks) one hour thirty minutes: A close reading paper of one hour thirty minutes consisting of two passages for 30 marks.

Course Assessment The Exam Paper 2 Critical Reading (40 marks) one hour thirty minutes: Scottish Set Text questions for twenty marks – the poetry of Carol Ann Duffy or the novel, “Sunset Song” by Lewis Grassic Gibbon for twenty marks Critical Essay (Drama, Prose – Fiction, Prose – Non-Fiction, Poetry, Film and Television Drama, Language) for twenty marks .

Course Assessment The Folio Two pieces of writing: One broadly creative – personal/reflective - 15 marks One broadly discursive –persuasive - 15 marks Total - 30 marks You will work on these in class and at home with support from your teacher but they MUST be your work. They will be marked externally and contribute to your final grade.
