El Subjuntivo

Verb tenses are used to place ideas in terms of where they take place in TIME. Imperfecto Pretérito Presente perfecto Presente Presente progresivo Futuro (ir + a + infinitive) Futuro (infinitive + é, ás, á, etc.) Condicional

*Verbs also have MOODS which place ideas in terms of their relationship to reality. All tenses we have already used are in the INDICATIVE mood, which describes things that take place in the current reality, or are presented as factual.

Other verb moods: IMPERATIVE (mandatos, or commands) and SUBJUNCTIVE

is most often used to express conditions that are NOT reality or fact. subjunctive mood is most often used to express conditions that are NOT reality or fact.

The subjunctive mood does not always translate well to English… …because sometimes when Spanish speakers use a SUBJUNCTIVE CONJUGATION, English speakers use the INFINITIVE. I want you to do the homework. We need them to go to the store. They are asking us to run a mile.

To set up sentences in the subjunctive, you need : 1. The preposition QUE (that) 2. A from one side of the QUE to the other. subject change

For example, “I want to go to college” is NOT subjunctive, but “I want YOU to go to college” IS subjunctive

One use of subjunctive is to express wants, hopes, and wishes.

Use the following sentence starters: Espero que (I hope that ) Ojalá que (‘Hopefully’ or ‘would that’) Quiero que (I want…)

After the ‘que’, conjugate in the SUBJUNCTIVE: Find the ‘yo’ form of the chosen verb in the indicative cantar  canto correr  corro salir  salgo

Remove the ‘o’ Add the following opposite endings: ER/IR AR -a -amos -e -emos -as -es -a -an -e -en

Conjugations: Cantar cante cantemos cantes cante canten

correr corra corramos corras corra corran

Salir Salga salgamos Salgas Salga salgan

Examples: Espero que ellos beban agua. Queremos que tú salgas bien en la escuela.

-stem-changing conjugations apply in the subjunctive, but are removed in the nosotros form. Poder:

-Spelling and –go verb changes apply to ALL forms. Tener: Conocer:

-all reflexive pronouns go BEFORE the verb: Broncearse:
