Apparel Development II Ms. Jessica Edwards 2.01 THE ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN

Line, shape, space, texture, and color. Designers learn how to combine the elements of design within an object to create a finished project. Line is a series of points connected together to form a narrow path Shape is the outline, or silhouette of an object Space is the area inside the shape or outline of an object. THE ELEMENTS OF DESIGN

Texture is the surface characteristics or feel of an object Color is the hue, value, and intensity of the light reflected by an object THE ELEMENTS OF DESIGN CONTINUED

Line is the most basic element of design because it divides areas into shapes and spaces. Line can also give direction, or a feeling of movement to a design. Individual lines can be straight or curved. Straight Lines: Vertical Horizontal UNDERSTANDING LINE

Diagonal Zigzag Curved Lines: Can be circular or gently waved Add softness Can move in a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal direction

Illusions can make things appear quite different from what they are. In fashion design, illusions cannot make people disappear, but they do create a bit of magic. LINES AND ILLUSIONS

Eyes follow the dominant line. Vertical lines lead the lines up and down. Horizontal lines move the eyes from side to side. See pgs. 173 and 174 in Clothing: Fashion, Fabrics, and Construction. HOW CAN YOU CREATE OPTICAL ILLUSIONS IN FASHION?

Silhouettes are the outer shapes. Most clothes are one of four basic shapes: Natural Tubular Bell Full See pg. 176 of Clothing: Fashion, Fabrics, and Construction. FASHION SHAPES

Structural lines are formed by sewing the different parts of a garment together. They include seams, darts, tucks, gathers, pleats, necklines, armholes, waistlines, and hems. FILLING IN A SILHOUETTE

Decorative lines are created by adding trims, such as braid, edgings, lace, and buttons, to a garment. Fabric Patterns Fabric patterns, just like fabric texture, can create illusions in design. Small prints in subdued colors usually decrease apparent size. Large, overall designs increase size.

The principles of design are artistic guidelines for using the various design elements within a garment. These include: Balance Proportion Emphasis Rhythm Harmony THE PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN

Use These Design Elements According to These Principles To Create Line Shape Space Texture Color + Balance Proportion Emphasis Rhythm Harmony = Good design DESIGN EQUATION
