“Why we were clothes” assignment

Elements of Art in fashion

Shape An area that is contained within an implied line area or is seen and identified because of color or value changes. Two dimensional. May be geometric or organic. The shape is created by the cut and construction of a garment.

Form Describes volume and mass, or the three-dimensional aspects of objects that take up space. The overall shape of a garment is its form or silhouette, its overall outline.

Texture Texture is determined by a fabric’s fibers, yarns and method of construction. It can be woven or knit into the fabric. Visual texture is “printed” onto the surface of fabrics or garments.

Shiny Textures make the body look larger because they reflect light.
They make fabric colors look lighter and brighter, thus making the body look larger. Rough textures tend to subdue the colors of fabrics.

Stiff crisp textures make the total shape appear bigger because they stand away from the body.
Clinging, soft textures reveal the body’s true silhouette.

Space The three dimensional volume that has width, height, and depth. Space can be an illusion that can be achieved with various techniques like overlapping and size relationships.

Line A continuous mark made on a surface. Line often suggests movement. Can be angular, curved, thick, thin, broken, dotted, etc.

Vertical – up and down gives the impression of being taller/thinner. gives a feeling of dignity, strength, poise and sophistication. Curved – rounded, circular or flattened out. increase the size and shape of the figure give a soft, gentle, youthful, charming, graceful and flowing feeling.

Horizontal – gives the impression of being shorter and heavier. Diagonal – slanted, the degree it is slanted determines the visual effect on clothes.

Color Color is light reflected off of objects. Color has three main characteristics: *hue (the name of the color, such as red, green, blue, etc.) *value (how light or dark it is) *intensity (how bright or dull it is).

Hue Value Intensity
