Principles of Design Clothing Design Basics

2 Principles of Design Guidelines that tell you how the elements of design are combined When these are used correctly, the goal of design- harmony- is achieved

3 Balance Balance means that when you look at a garment, it has equal visual weight on both sides It must be equally visually interesting on either side of an imaginary line This must be achieved with color, line, form and/or texture These imaginary lines occur vertically down the center of the body and horizontally at the waist

6 Proportion Refers to how the size of one part relates to the size of the other part It also related to how the size of one item relates to the whole outfit For example, a sweater that comes down past your knees is not in proportion It also applies to accessories- ex. Huge handbag on a small woman

9 Rhythm Is a feeling of movement
Rhythm in design is achieved through repetition, graduation, and radiation of colors, lines, shapes, and textures Your eyes should move from one part of a design to another Plaids and stripes should be matched at the seams

13 Emphasis The center of the interest of design is called emphasis
It is what you see first when you look at an outfit If you wanted to emphasize the waistline, you would use a colorful belt If you want to look taller, place the emphasis high on the body

15 Harmony Is the goal of design
It is achieved when all parts of a design look as if they belong together The design elements (line, color, form and texture) fit the personality of the wearer and suit each other A design must be well balanced, have a sense of rhythm, and be in good proportion to achieve harmony
