1 Using design in Fashion Elements of Design

2 What is clothing made up of?
Design is the plan used to put an idea together as a whole Good fashion has a combination of the elements and principles of design

3 Elements are put together in different ways to form designs
Elements of Design Color Line Texture Shape Elements are put together in different ways to form designs

4 Elements of Design Directions: Using your textbook ( Pg ) & the graphic organizer provided, summarize the meaning of each of the following elements of design: Color Line Texture Shape

5 Elements of Design Color: Most exciting design element
Line: Distinct, elongated mark as if drawn by a pencil or pen. Texture: The surface quality of goods. Shape: Overall outline of a garment, it is the form or silhouette.

6 Color Most exciting design element
Elements of design: Most exciting design element Color is first thing a customer notices and main factor when choosing a garment

7 Line Refers to an elongated mark that connects two or more points.
Elements of design: Refers to an elongated mark that connects two or more points. LINE: Have direction, width, length Eyes follow lines Lines suggest movement, leading eyes up, down, side-to-side, around Outline outer and inner spaces of garments

8 Structural – lines required to maintain the structure of the garment
Vs. Structural – lines required to maintain the structure of the garment Ex: Seams, pleats, darts, etc. Decorative – lines created by the designer purely for decoration Ex: Lace, buttons, flaps, etc. Decorative

9 Line Different types of lines give different illusions
Elements of design: Different types of lines give different illusions There are 3 main types of lines: Straight Curved Jagged

10 Straight Lines Message Illusion
Bold, Severe, Strong, Formal, Crisp, Stiff Illusion Shows dignity, power, formality, steadiness, stability Can look stiff if overdone

11

12 Curved Lines Message Illusion Less conservative, formal and powerful
Give soft, youthful, gentle, charming, graceful feeling Illusion Accentuate the natural lines of the body Make things look larger than they are Should be used sparingly

13 Curved Lines

14 Jagged Lines Message Change direction abruptly (ex: zigzags)
Create a jumpy, confused feeling Use sparingly (they are very noticeable) Wear them if you are self-confident

15 Jagged Lines

16 Line Direction The direction that the line falls affects the design, message and illusion drastically. Line Directions: Vertical Horizontal Diagonal

17 Vertical Vertical: Lines that go up and down
Feeling of dignity, strength, poise, sophistication Leads eye up and down, Makes body look taller and thinner

18 Vertical

19 Horizontal Horizontal: Lines go from side to side
Feeling of restfulness and gentleness Leads eye across the body, makes wearer seem shorter and wider Use where you want to look wider

20 Horizontal

21 Diagonal Diagonal- lines that are slanted
Degree of slant and length of lines determine the visual effect Draws attention to where they are used

22

23 Texture Elements of design:
Surface quality of garments (how it looks and feels) Roughness, smoothness, dullness, glossiness, stiffness, softness Bulky fabrics Add visual size (make you look bigger) Can disguise a flaw Can overpower a small person Smooth, flat textures Make you look smaller Shiny textures Make you look bigger, as they reflect light Dull Textures Make you look smaller, as they absorb light

24 Texture Elements of design: “Blindfold” Activity….

25 Texture Elements of design: “Blindfold” Activity: Without looking in your bag, complete & discuss the following tasks with your partner. How would you describe each of the textures within you bag?(Ex: smooth, rough, etc.) What illusion would this fabric give to a persons body? (Hint: Look at your notes!) 

26 shape Elements of design: Form or silhouette of a garment
Shape or outline seen from a distance Can reveal or hide a natural body contour Try to flatter good features and hide less attractive features Full, wide, flaring clothing shapes make you look bigger Trim, compact silhouettes make you look smaller Straight, tubular shapes make you look taller & slimmer Form fitting clothes reveal any unattractive contours; best worn for “ideal shape” figures

27 Apply What you Know Elements of design: 1. What specific types of different textures/shaped/lined items do you own a lot of? 2. How do these elements help you look/feel good when wearing the item? Ex: I wear straight dresses to help bring out the curves of my body.
