What is an Employment Application? An application is a standardized form used to collect relevant information: Contact Information Work Experience Skills References

Isn’t that on a resume? Resume subjective (opinion, emotion) used to get an interview with a decision maker Application objective (fact-based) formally documents your qualifications in a legal document

aPPLICATIONS Applications are also used to: demonstrate your ability to follow directions ensure that complete information is provided require a signature to attest to truthfulness

Attention to Detail Preparation ~ Always bring copies of resume & other relevant information to ensure accuracy Accurate and Complete Information ~ including name, address, SSN, education, work experiences, references, etc. Legible Penmanship & Neatness ~ Use a blue or black pen only ~ Consider capital letters for clarity References ~ Always ask permission before listing a person as a reference

Electronic Applications Include complete, accurate, and effectively organized information Follow additional criteria: Attention to security concerns Use of keywords Scanner-friendly format

What criteria do employers use to evaluate applications? Think About It!

Application Accuracy DO DON’T Complete the form neatly & check spelling. Answer every question! Write “N/A” if not applicable. Use your full name, not a nickname. List a specific job title if asked for your preference. Leave unintentional marks such as scribbles or crossed out words Skip sections Use colored ink or a pencil List “anything” for a position
