Animal Behavior

Behavior All the actions an animal performs. Includes: Obtaining food Avoid predators Finding a mate Evolved over time How?

Behavior Everything reacts to stimulus (something to make you react). What was your response? Behaviors function to assist in survival and reproduction. Hiding Nest building Searching for a mate Some are instincts or innate (an inborn response to a stimuli i.e. coughing)

Learned Behaviors Imprinting-first few movements a newborn sees is the mother ( a mental picture engrained). Keeps new-born near mother and learn what others in their species look like. Conditioning is a learned response to a good or bad stimulus. (Homework done correctly = 100). Trial-and-Error is learning to perform a task more skillfully over time. Insight learning -problem solving applying reasoning

Communication Use scents, sounds, and body language to communicate. Pheromones are scents that affect other’s behavior. Aggression is a threatening behavior to gain control over others. Marking territory

Behavior cycles Circadian cycles-daily behavior cycle (work during day and sleep at night). Hibernation- a state of reduced activity during the winter when food is scarce. Migration is a regular seasonal journey from one place to another and back again. To find food Find more suitable living area Find a mate Behavioral adaptation that has evolved over time to help animals survive.
