Behavior Behavior – the way an organism reacts to changes in its internal or external environment usually as a reaction to a stimulus Stimulus – any kind of signal that carries information and can be detected

2 Types of Behavior Innate Behavior – behavior that is performed correctly the first time instinct or inborn behavior Learned Behavior – a behavior that is acquired as a result of experience

Habituation process by which an animal decreases or stops its response to a repetitive stimulus that neither rewards or harms the animal

Conditioning an animal makes a mental connection between a stimulus and some kind of reward or punishment

Migration – periodic movement from one place to another and back again Hibernation – a period of inactivity and lowered metabolic rates (usually winter) Estivation – a period of dormancy to avoid hot, dry conditions

Courtship Behavior behavior that helps to identify healthy mates
visual, sound, nuptial gifts

Social Behavior organisms that live together and behave in a way that benefits the entire group usually a complex “pecking” order

Competition and Aggression
behavior to establish dominance and control of territory, food, etc

Communication can be visual, chemical (pheromones), sound, or language
