Practicum How-To-Guide: A 3-MINUTE PRESENTATION ON HOW TO land a practicum that is right for you! Presented by Boston university school of public health career services office

We are here to help you… Navigate the practicum search, approval and registration process Learn about the diverse practicums that SPH students have done in the past Explore your career goals, and narrow down the ideal practicum for you Focus on skills that will build your resume and make you a “marketable” candidate Market yourself during your search, and successfully land a great practicum!

After reviewing this PPT, you should…. Know that timing is perfect to begin your practicum search Know how to organize your thoughts and develop a plan to move forward Know about all of our Career Services resources And finally, know that you WILL – for sure – secure a practicum!

You are not too late – you will secure a practicum! Practicums are posted all year; summer practicums are posted through May (sometimes June!) SPH Handshake is THE PLACE to see practicum postings. Be sure to fully complete your Handshake profile! Boston is the healthcare mecca for practicums; we can also help identify opportunities and networks elsewhere In 2016, there were 500+ postings in some of the world’s top private-sector, non-profit and government agencies Practicum schedules are often flexible, and many are paid! Tip: The words “practicum” and “internship” are used interchangeably. Be sure to look at both!

How to begin: suggested step-by-step process Complete your full Handshake Profile. This will give you access to postings and career events! Begin working on your Practicum Plan using our customized template (attached) After your develop your Practicum Plan, we recommend the following: Attend resume and cover letter drop-in session to have materials reviewed and finalized Attend relevant workshops (see updated list in Handshake) Contact prior practicum supervisors and alumni at target organizations to inquire about practicum needs Find Handshake postings of interest and begin applying Optional: Meet with a Career Outreach Specialist to discuss your plan, including contacting networks
