Science ideas I need to know Physics Year 9 Energy Science ideas I need to know Start of Unit End of Unit I know this I know some of this I need to learn this I know this Understand that energy makes things happen Understand energy is measured in a unit called a joule (J). Understand that energy can exist as Chemical potential, Gravitational potential, Elastic potential, Kinetic, Sound, Electrical, Light, Heat Understand the difference between Active(Kinetic) and Potential (stored)types of energy Understand the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy Understand that energy is always conserved. Understand that energy can be transformed from one type to another. Learn about energy efficiency – how sources of energy are transformed into useful energy and how transformation losses, as well as inefficient use, increase the amount of energy required. Be aware that natural energy resources can be renewable or non-renewable. Appreciate the necessity of finding an alternative to fossil fuels in the near future. Understand that there are alternative (renewable) energy resources, but that no single renewable energy source is likely to act as a total replacement for present energy resources. Understand that heat/temperature is linked to particle movement. Understand that energy can be transferred by conduction, convection or radiation. Link the method of heat transfer to the state of matter and understand the terms conductor and insulator. Observe and explain convection currents

Science ideas I need to know Physics Year 9 Waves Science ideas I need to know Start of Unit End of Unit I know this I know some of this I need to learn this I know this Understand that energy can be transferred as waves. Know the meaning of the terms wavelength, amplitude, frequency and wave speed. Know and be able to use the equation: wave speed = wavelength x frequency in simple applications. Understand that light energy can travel as rays. Understand that light energy can be reflected, refracted or dispersed. Label the angle of incidence and angle of reflection. Understand that visible light belongs to the electromagnetic spectrum. Associate the terms radio, microwave, infra-red, ultraviolet and X-rays with the appropriate parts of the electromagnetic spectrum and know some of the uses to which these parts of the spectrum are put.. Investigate that white light is made from colours mixed together. Appreciate the nature of colour vision in terms of primary and secondary colours.. Recognise different colours have different wavelengths
