Mock IGCSE Coordinated science Physics section

P1: THE STRENGTH OF SOLIDS Hookes law – including calculations Moments – calculations Why things balance – “The Principle of Moments” Vectors – including adding vectors using diagrams ( The parallelogram law)

P2: PARTICLES IN MOTION Describe the particle theory of matter Explain how motion of particles depends on temperature. Use the Kelvin temperature scale Explain evaporation, diffusion and changes of state using particle theory. Calculate density and know how to use eureke cans Relate pressure, temperature and volume for a gas.

P3: MOTION Understand speed, time and acceleration. Carry out simple calculations (v = at and s = ½ at2) Plot and interpret graphs of speed/ time and distance/ time Know the difference between speed and velocity

P4: FORCE AND MOTION Force is measured in Newtons Carry out calculations using F=Ma Understand balanced and unbalanced forces Understand friction and air resistance

P5: ENERGY TRANSFER Work = force x distance Pressure = force / area Understand energy transfer Understand hydraulic systems Discuss efficiency and wasted energy

P6: TRANSFERRING ENERGY BY HEATING Understand conduction, convection and radiation Use specific heat capacity in calculations Understand latent heat Write about energy conservation

P7: USING ELECTRICITY Draw simple circuits Use ammeters and voltmeters Understand electric current and coulombs Understand the dangers of electricity

P8: ENERGY AND ELECTRICITY Explain voltage and potential difference Calculate power in a circuit (P= V I ) Understand resistance and Ohm’s law (graphs and calculations) Calculate total resistance of resistors in series and parallel Describe the factors that affect the resistance of a wire

P9: WAVES Know how to draw transverse and longitudinal waves Understand amplitude, frequency and wavelength Carry out calculations (wave speed = wavelength × frequency)

P10: LIGHT AND SOUND Understand reflection and refraction for light and sound (including echoes and sonar) Identify real and virtual images from a lens Draw optical fibres Know about audible and non audible frequencies (including the range of frequencies a human can hear) Know about how sound can damage hearing.

P11: MAKING USE OF WAVES Know about the EMS (inc. radio, microwave, infra-red, ultraviolet and X-rays) Know how colour and frequency are related Know the primary and secondary colours for light Know how a prism can split light into colours (ROYGBIV) Know about waves during earthquakes)

P12: KINETIC ENERGY AND MOMENTUM Define KE and momentum and be able to do calculations. Understand how “conservation of momentum” can be applied

P12: KINETIC ENERGY AND MOMENTUM Know the difference between mass and weight Explain how objects can orbit the Earth Write about objects falling to Earth (especially men with parachutes) Know the value of g on Earth

P14: MAGNETISM AND ELECTRICITY Know which materials magnets affect Know that the Earth has a magnetic field Draw magnetic fields Describe an electromagnet Draw a dynamo and an electric motor Know how to make a current using a magnetic field Know about the force on a current in a magnetic field Describe how a relay works

P18: ENERGY RESOURCES Know and describe renewable and non renewable energy resources Understand (and calculate efficiency)

P19: ENERGY DISTRIBUTION Know about fuels and electricity generation Know how transformers are used in the National Grid Carry out calculations with transformers (Vp / Vs = Np / Ns)
