2 Refraction and Reflection
When a ray of light, hits a surface, it will either be refracted, reflected or both will occur. How do we know which will happen? ONE MINUTE TO THINK OF AN ANSWER WITH YOUR PARTNER TIME IS UP 30 SECONDS LEFT Depends on the transparency of the object Light will only reflect and not be able to refract if it is opaque

4 Reflection Light moves in straight lines
This can be demonstrated with simple experiments

5 Reflection Incident ray – The ray of light that is coming from a light source Normal – an imaginary line perpendicular to a surface that a ray of light reflects off of Reflected ray – the ray of light that bounces off of a surface

6 Reflection Will the source of light be on the right side of the normal? Or the left? Draw it in

7 Reflection Angle of Incidence – This is the angle (can be measured) the incident ray makes with the normal Angle of Reflection – This is the angle the reflected ray makes with the normal

8 Reflection Where should the angles be measured from?

9 Reflection Plane mirror vs. Curved mirrors
A plane mirror, is a flat mirror. Ex: Bathroom mirrors, rear view mirror

10 Reflection A curved mirror can be any of two types:
Concave mirrors – Have a reflecting surface that curves inward. Imagine the inside of a bowl Ex: Spoons, satellite dishes, flashlights

11 Reflection Convex mirrors – Have a reflecting surface that curves outward. Imagine the outside of a bowl Ex: Safety mirrors on trucks and busses, side-view mirrors on cars

18 Review: Electromagnetic radiation
Electromagnetic radiation is the transmission (movement) of energy in the form of waves. These waves range from long radio waves to very short gamma rays The electromagnetic spectrum is the range of energies that include long radio waves, microwaves, infrared waves, visible light waves, ultraviolet waves, X-rays and gamma rays.
