1 Science Review for Energy, Energy Transformation, and Heat Transfer

2 What is energy? Energy is the ability to do work or cause change. How do you measure energy? Joules are units of measurement for energy. What are the 2 main types of energy? Potential and Kinetic Mass and velocity affects an objects kinetic energy

3 What is kinetic energy? Kinetic energy is energy that an object has due to its motion. What is potential energy? Potential energy is energy an object has due to its shape or position. What is gravitational potential energy? Gravitational potential energy is energy an object has due to its height.

4 What is elastic potential energy? Give two examples.
Elastic potential energy is energy an object has when it is stretched or compressed. Examples: rubber band, a child’s toy, a bow and arrow Energy can be transferred or converted to another forms. Mechanical energy: this is the potential and kinetic energy associated with the motion of an object

5 Thermal energy: is the total energy of the particles in a substance or material
Chemical energy: is energy stored in the chemical bonds of an object Electrical Energy: is the movement of electrical charges that produces energy or electricity Electromagnetic Energy: is energy that travels in waves Nuclear Energy: is energy that is stored in the nucleus of an atom

6 What is an energy transformation?
An energy transformation is when one form of energy changes into another. When energy transforms from one type to another, what happens? Work gets done. What is the difference between a single transformation and a multiple transformation? Single: When energy starts as one type and goes to another type only Multiple: When energy starts as one type and then goes through a series of transformations.

7 What is the most common type of energy transformation?
Potential-Kinetic According to the Law of Conservation of Energy, energy can not be created or destroyed it just changes forms. What is released when you destroy a small amount of matter? A huge amount of energy is released in the form of thermal energy.

8 Conduction: when heat is transferred through direct contact
Convection: when heat is transferred through the movement of currents Radiation: when heat is transferred through waves Insulator: a material that stops or resist the flow of heat or electrical charges Conductor: is a material that allows heat or electrical charges to move through it easily.
