1 6.2 Energy

2 What is energy? Energy is the ability to do work or cause change.

3 Types of Energy There are 2 types of energy: Potential Kinetic

4 Kinetic Energy Energy of Motion (Movement) Energy in use

5 Potential Energy Stored energy Not being used
Can be turned into Kinetic Energy

6 Example:

7

8 Identify the Type of Energy:

9 Forms of Energy There are many forms of energy: Mechanical (moving)
Chemical (released when chemicals react) Found in food Light (energy you see) Electrical (electrical charge)

10 Cont. Thermal (energy that makes things feel warm)
Nuclear (in the nucleus of an atom) Sound (energy you hear) Electromagnetic (travels in waves in space- Examples: X-ray, radio, microwaves) Solar (energy from the sun)

11 Identify the form:

12 Cont.

13 Energy Transformation
Energy can transform from one form to another. Forms of energy can convert from one form to another:

14 Examples:

15

16 Energy cannot be created or destroyed What Happens to Energy?
Law of Conservation of Energy: Energy cannot be created or destroyed

17 What does that mean? We Do Not make energy
We can not get rid of energy Energy only changes form

18 Sources Of Energy We depend on Natural Resources to get our energy
Some are Renewable, some are Nonrenewable

19 Renewable Resource Resources that can be replaced at the same rate they are used Examples: Trees, Animals

20 Nonrenewable Resources
Form at a much slower rate than they are used Examples: Coal, Natural Gas, Oil, Minerals

21 Energy Resources Resources that are used to provide the energy we need. Some are renewable, some are not Each has its own advantages and disadvantages

22 Types of Energy Resources
Solar Nuclear Geothermal

23 Cont. Fossil Fuels Wind Biomass

24 Review Name the two types of Energy and explain the difference
Name as many forms of energy as you can Explain the transformation of energy using lunch as an example What does the law of Conservation of Energy state?

25 Cont. What is the difference between a renewable and a nonrenewable resource? Name as many Types of Energy resources as you can:
