2 S8P4. Students will explore the wave nature of sound and electromagnetic radiation. a. Identify the characteristics of electromagnetic and mechanical waves. b. Describe how the behavior of light waves is manipulated causing reflection, refraction diffraction, and absorption. c. Explain how the human eye sees objects and colors in terms of wavelengths. d. Describe how the behavior of waves is affected by medium (such as air, water, solids). f. Diagram the parts of the wave and explain how the parts are affected by changes in amplitude and pitch.

3 What is an electromagnetic wave?

4 Are made by vibrating electric charges that can travel through space without matter.

5 What is the electromagnetic wave spectrum?

6 The entire range of electromagnetic wave frequencies.

7 Why are electromagnetic waves described by different names?
Depending on the different frequencies. Radio waves have the lowest frequency, Gamma Rays have the highest frequency.

8 What does the electromagnetic spectrum consist of?
RADIO WAVES MICROWAVES INFARED WAVES VISIBLE LIGHT ULTRAVIOLET WAVES XRAYS GAMMA RAYS

9 What is the difference between transparent, translucent, and opaque?

10 Transparent lets all light through.
Translucent lets some light through. Opaque lets no light through.

11 Explain the reflection of light.

12 Explain the refraction of light.

13 How does a prism work? The bending of light as it passes from one medium to another is called refraction.

14 What is the visible light range?
Red has the longest wavelength, Violet has the shortest wavelength.

15 What colors do you see refracting from the prism?

16 How is rainbow formed?

17 Light is refracted when it enters water.

18 It is what is being reflected back to our eyes.
Why do we see color? It is what is being reflected back to our eyes.

19 Is black a color that is present in visible light?
All colors are being absorbed.

20 Why do white objects appear white?
All colors are being reflected.

21 Colored material that absorbs some color and reflects others.
What is a pigment? Colored material that absorbs some color and reflects others.

22 What are the primary colors of light?

23 A transparent object with two refracting surfaces.
What is a lens? A transparent object with two refracting surfaces.

24 This is Light refracting (bending due to slower/faster speed in a medium) through a convex lens.

25 Light refraction through a concave lens.
Diverging light rays.
