How has the Enlightenment effected modern society? Modern societies have rights to life, liberty, and property. People control their own lives. Not kings and queens. These are the views of John Locke. Modern societies such as the United States have a government which is voted for and separates the powers of the government into three branches so one person can’t get to much control . These are the views Baron de Montesquieu Modern societies have equal, where everyone has the rights. These are the views of Jean Jacques Rousseau Modern societies have freedom of speech, freedom of religion. These are the views of Voltaire. Many modern societies disagree with Thomas Hobbes, and want to control their own lives.
