Definitions Health – a “state of complete, mental, physical and social well-being, and not simply the absence of disease or infirmity”. 2) Exercise – “a form of physical activity done to maintain or improve health and/or physical fitness, it is not competitive sport”. 3) Fitness –through exercise and training “the ability to meet the demands of the environment”.

Big Picture You will be able to explain the terms health, fitness and exercise and how they are related to a balanced, healthy lifestyle. You will know the five different components of health-related exercise and six components of skill-related fitness and be able to link them to different activities. 5

Learning Outcomes All pupils will be able to explain the terms health, fitness and exercise. All pupils will be able to define the five factors of Health Related Exercise. Most pupils will be able to link them to an activity. Some will be able to understand how an individual’s performance in the Skill Related Fitness factors might be affected by their Health Related Fitness levels. 6
