The ability to handle physical work/play without becoming tired

Fitness reduces the risk of developing certain diseases like diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. The benefits are Physical, Mental- Emotional, and Social

Strengthens/tones muscles Strengthens heart, lungs, bones Increases energy Helps to maintain a healthy weight Helps lower cholesterol and blood pressure

5 Mental-Emotional Benefits of Fitness
Helps us to sleep better Helps us deal with stress better Helps us get along with others better Helps build confidence/self-esteem Decreases anxiety

6 Social Benefits to Fitness
Helps make friends (teams/partners) Helps us to work with others

Let’s brainstorm some ideas as to why people choose not to get started with an exercise program…….

9 Elements of Fitness Cardiovascular-ability of the heat, lungs, and blood vessels to function efficiently when a person exercises (most important) Muscular Endurance-ability to contract the muscles many times without tiring or hold one contraction for a long time Strength-ability of the muscle to exert a force Flexibility-ability to move the joints of the body through a full range of motion Body Composition-the fat, bones, muscle , and fluids that make up the body

10 One of the best ways to ensure that you get enough physical activity is to
exercise. There are two types of exercise: Aerobic (with oxygen) 5X a week Anaerobic (without oxygen) 2-3 X week

11 Skill-Related Fitness
Agility-ability to change positions of your body quickly (wrestling, diving, soccer, basketball, football, gymnastics, martial arts) Balance-ability to keep upright while standing or moving (gymnastics/ice skating/dance/skiing) Coordination-ability to use your senses together with multiple body parts (baseball, softball, tennis, golf, badminton, bowling) Power-ability to use strength quickly ( shot put, discus, high jump, football, swim races/cross-country skiing) Reaction Time-amount of time it takes to move once you realize the need to act (baseball, basketball, football, racquetball) Speed-ability to perform a movement or cover a distance in a short period of time (sprinting, soccer, pitching, football, martial arts) ****Good health does not come from skill-related fitness…..it comes from being active
