We record the ISBN in MARC field 020. On a catalog card, we record that it is an ISBN and then record the number with the hyphens. In a MARC record, the fact that this is an ISBN is handled by being in the 020 field so we don’t say ISBN and we omit the hyphens. Make sure you record the entire ISBN. In an ISBN the last digit is actually a “check digit.” Meaning that an algorithm was applied to the first nine digits to produce the tenth digit. This allows the some systems to make sure that the ISBN has been entered accurately. Sometimes an ISBN can have an X as the check digit. Be sure to include the X when you record the ISBN. RDA also says to include the terms of availability. This is usually the price, including an indication as to whether the price is listed in dollars, euros, yens, etc. The terms of availability are recorded in subfield c, preceded by a space-colon-space. Library of Congress generally does not add the terms of availability.
