1 Descriptive Cataloging with RDA Title and Statement of Responsibility
Let’s continue talking the title and statement of responsibility area of our record. Part II

2 Title page Title page verso Here we have a title proper (“The wild boy of Burundi”) followed by a subtitle (“a study of an outcast child”).

3 RDA , D.1.2.2 Record other title information that appears on the same source of information as the title proper. D Precede each unit of other title information by a colon. 245 _ _ The wild boy of Burundi : ‡b a study of an outcast child / ‡c Harlan Lane & Richard Pillard. 250 First edition 264 □ 1 New York : ‡b Random House, ‡c [1978]. xiv, 188 pages, [8] pages of plates : ‡b illustrations, map ; ‡c 24 cm. 336 text ‡ b txt ‡2 rdacontent 337 unmediated ‡ b n ‡2 rdamedia 338 volume ‡ b nc ‡2 rdacarrier 500 Foreword by B.F. Skinner. 500 Includes index. Our title proper is recorded in subfield a. The subtitle is recorded in subfield b, which is designated for other title information. A subtitle is preceded by a space-colon-space. The punctuation that precedes the subtitle is recorded at the end of subfield a.

4 The subtitle is “a guide to field identification.”
Title page Title page verso In this case the title proper of the work is actually “Birds of North America.” The subtitle is “a guide to field identification.” We record the title proper first, followed by the subtitle even though the subtitle precedes the title proper on the page. Now, how would you know that “Birds of North America” is the title proper? As a cataloger gains experience with books in a particular area she also becomes more familiar with the title/subtitle patterns of books in that area. One way to determine this is by looking at catalog records for other works in the series (if the work is part of a series) or other works by the same author.

5 RDA Other title information can include any phrase appearing with a title proper that is indicative of: the character, contents, etc., of the resource (invalid) 245 _ _ Birds of North America : ‡b a guide to field identification / ‡c by Chandler S. Robbins, Bertel Bruun, and Herbert S. Zim ; illustrated by Arthur Singer. 264 □ 1 New York : ‡b Golden Press, ‡c [1966]. 340 pages : ‡b color illustrations, color maps ; ‡c 19 cm. text ‡ b txt ‡2 rdacontent unmediated ‡ b n ‡2 rdamedia volume ‡ b nc ‡2 rdacarrier Golden field guide series Includes bibliographical references (pages ) and index. Golden field guide series Other title information often gives you information about the character or contents of the resources, as is the situation here. Note that the title proper precedes the other title information in the cataloging record even though the subtitle was placed above the title proper in the record.

6 Statement of Responsibility
A statement of responsibility is a statement relating to the identification and/or function of any persons, families, or corporate bodies responsible for the creation of, or contributing to the realization of, the intellectual or artistic content of a resource. A statement of responsibility sometimes includes words or phrases that are neither names nor linking words. Once we have recorded the title and any other title information such as a subtitle, we need to turn our attention to the person or group of persons responsible for the intellectual content of the work. We’re going to be talking about the way we record the statement of responsibility. As you’ll see shortly, we record a statement of responsibility even if no name is given for the person.

7 STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITY
Title page Title page verso STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITY In some cases this is fairly straightforward. Here, for example, we have a single statement of responsibility on the title page. On this title page the words “Garrison Keillor” constitute a statement of responsibility. We record this statement of responsibility the way it appears on the title page. Since the title page does NOT include the word “by” we do not add the word “by” to our record.

8 RDA , , and D.1.2.2 Transcribe a statement of responsibility as it appears on the source of information Record statements of responsibility relating to title proper by applying the basic instructions at 2.4.1 D Precede the first statement of responsibility by a diagonal slash. _ _ Lake Wobegon days / ‡c Garrison Keillor. 264 □ 1 New York, N.Y. : ‡b Viking, ‡c 1985. x, 337 pages : ‡b illustrations ; ‡c 24 cm. text ‡ b txt ‡2 rdacontent unmediated ‡ b n ‡2 rdamedia volume ‡ b nc ‡2 rdacarrier 500 “Portions of this book appeared originally in The Atlantic monthly”—Title page verso. Our statement of responsibility is recorded in subfield c. ISBD (found in RDA Appendix D) tells us to precede our statement of responsibility by a space-slash-space. Notice that there is no other title information here (no subtitle), and thus no subfield b and no colon. Punctuation within the fields is determined by what information is being recorded. In this case we do not have a subtitle but we do have a statement of responsibility. Hence at the end of subfield a we have a slash, the punctuation that precedes a statement of responsibility.

9 In the 245 field we are transcribing the title page.
Title page verso In the 245 field we are transcribing the title page. However, we transcribe the elements: title, subtitle, statement of responsibility in the same order every time. Therefore, even though the statement of responsibility appears above the title on the title page, we record the title first, followed by the statement of responsibility. We record the name the way it appears: in the case as two initials followed by a surname. Later we’ll see that in other fields we will treat the name differently.

10 RDA 245 _ _ Against the wind / ‡c J.F. Freedman. 264 □ 1 New York : ‡b Viking, ‡c 1991. vii, 423 pages ; ‡c 24 cm. text ‡ b txt ‡2 rdacontent unmediated ‡ b n ‡2 rdamedia volume ‡ b nc ‡2 rdacarrier Notice that again we did not have the word “by” so we do not insert it. The cataloger has recorded the name as it appeared on the title page. The statement of responsibility is preceded by a space-slash-space.

11 This is an example of a British term of honour.
Title page Title page verso This is an example of a British term of honour. We record the name with the term of honour.

12 RDA 2.4.1.4 _ _ Digging up the past / ‡c Sir Leonard Woolley.
[Regarding inclusion of a title of nobility or British term of honor see example “by Sir Richard Acland”] _ _ Digging up the past / ‡c Sir Leonard Woolley. 250 Revised edition 264 □ 1 New York. : ‡b T. Y. Crowell, ‡c 1954. xiii, 125 pages, 32 pages of plates : ‡b illustrations ; ‡c 20 cm. text ‡ b txt ‡2 rdacontent unmediated ‡ b n ‡2 rdamedia volume ‡ b nc ‡2 rdacarrier 500 Includes index. Notice that the statement of responsibility has been recorded the way it appeared on the title page, including the term of honour. [For this person “Sir” is a British term of honor]

13 Title page Title page verso Here we have a collection of speeches by the Chicago anarchists. Lucy Parson was not one of the eight anarchists. She merely compiled the speeches. If we simply recorded the statement of responsibility as it appears on the piece, it would imply that Lucy was the author. In this case we need to clarify Lucy’s role in our cataloging record.

14 RDA 2.4.1.7 245 _ _ Famous speeches of the eight Chicago
Clarification of Role Add a word or short phrase if necessary to clarify the role of a person, family, or corporate body named in a statement of responsibility. Indicate that the information was taken from a source outside the resource itself (see 2.2.4) 245 _ _ Famous speeches of the eight Chicago anarchists / ‡c [compiled by] Lucy Parsons. 246 _ 8 Speeches of the eight Chicago anarchists 264 □ 1 New York : ‡b Arno Press, ‡c 1969. 121 pages : ‡b portraits ; ‡c 24 cm. text ‡ b txt ‡2 rdacontent unmediated ‡ b n ‡2 rdamedia volume ‡ b nc ‡2 rdacarrier Mass violence in America 500 Originally published: 2nd edition Chicago : L.E. Parsons, With new editorial note. 500 Speeches by August Spies, Michael Schwab, Oscar Neebe, Adolph Fischer, Louis Lingg, George Engel, Samuel Fielden and Albert R. Parsons. Mass violence in America Note that the cataloger has inserted the words “compiled by” in the statement of responsibility field. The square brackets are required in order to indicate that these words did not appear on the title page.

15 Title page Title page verso In this case we have a statement of responsibility in which no one is actually named. If that is all we have then that is what we will record.

16 RDA 2.4.1.9 245 _ _ A journal of the plague year : ‡b being
No Person, Family, or Corporate Body Named in the Statement of Responsibility—Record a statement of responsibility even if no person, family, or corporate body is named in that statement. 245 _ _ A journal of the plague year : ‡b being observations or memorials of the most remarkable occurrences ... during the last great visitation in 1665 / ‡c written by a citizen who continued all the while in London. 264 □ 1 London : ‡b William Clowes & Sons, ‡c 1974. 264 □ 2 Totowa, New Jersey : ‡b Distributed in the USA by Rowman & Littlefield pages : ‡b facsimile ; ‡c 24 cm. text ‡ b txt ‡2 rdacontent unmediated ‡ b n ‡2 rdamedia volume ‡ b nc ‡2 rdacarrier The Shakespeare Head edition of the novels & selected writings of Daniel Defoe Originally published: Oxford : B. Blackwell, 1928. The Shakespeare Head edition of the novels & We record the statement of responsibility as it appears on the piece even though no name is given.

17 No statement of responsibility
Title page Title page verso Subtitle Here the author’s name is incorporated in the titular material as a subtitle [click] but we do not have a separate statement of responsibility. [click] In this case we record the subtitle the way it is presented on the title page. We do not create a separate statement of responsibility if there is none present on the title page. No statement of responsibility

18 [Joe Queenan is the author.]
RDA , [See example : “the maple sugar paintings of Eastman Johnson”] [Statement of responsibility is a transcription element] _ _ Red Lobster, white trash and the Blue lagoon : ‡b Joe Queenan’s America. 250 First edition. 264 □ 1 New York : ‡b Hyperion, ‡c [1998]. 194 pages ; ‡c 24 cm. text ‡ b txt ‡2 rdacontent unmediated ‡ b n ‡2 rdamedia volume ‡ b nc ‡2 rdacarrier 500 Includes index. Note that our subtitle is recorded in subfield b. We have no subfield c because we had no separate statement of responsibility on the title page. [Joe Queenan is the author.]

19 Title page Title page verso In this case the author is included in the title and then again in a separate statement of responsibility. In this case we will record the statement of responsibility as it appears on the title page.

20 RDA Name of creator appears separately on the source of information as well as in the title proper. _ _ The best of Robert Benchley / ‡c by Robert Benchley ; with illustrations by Peter Arno, Herbert F. Roese, Adam John Barth and others. 264 □ 1 New York : ‡b Avenel Books, ‡c 1983. 353 pages : ‡b illustrations ; ‡c 24 cm. text ‡ b txt ‡2 rdacontent unmediated ‡ b n ‡2 rdamedia volume ‡ b nc ‡2 rdacarrier Even though the author is included in the title, we record the statement of responsibility naming the author as it appeared on the title page.

21 Title page Title page verso The print on this is a bit small so let me read it to you: “by John Leverence ; with an introduction by Jerome Weidman ; an interview by Sam L. Grogg, Jr. ; and an afterword by Ray B. Browne.” Here we have multiple statements of responsibility naming four persons, each listed as having performed a different function: author, author of the introduction, interviewer, and writer of the afterword. We will record them in the order in which they appear on the title page.

22 RDA , D.1.2.2 If there is more than one statement of responsibility, record the statements in the order indicated by the sequence, layout, or typography of the source of information from which the corresponding title, edition, or series information is taken. D Precede each subsequent statement of responsibility by a semicolon. 245 _ _ Irving Wallace : ‡b a writer’s profile / ‡c by John Leverence ; with an introduction by Jerome Weidman ; an interview by Sam L. Grogg, Jr. ; and an afterword by Ray B. Browne. 264 □ 1 Bowling Green, Ohio : ‡b Popular Press, ‡c 1974. 454 pages : ‡b illustrations ; ‡c 24 cm. text ‡ b txt ‡2 rdacontent unmediated ‡ b n ‡2 rdamedia volume ‡ b nc ‡2 rdacarrier Profiles in popular culture ; ‡v number 1 Includes index. Profiles in popular culture ; ‡v number 1 Here we have recorded multiple statements of responsibility. The first one is preceded by a space-slash-space. Each of the following ones is preceded by a space-semicolon-space. Where do we find information about which punctuation marks to use? In Appendix D. (In RDA only the first statement of responsibility is required. The following ones are optional.)
