1 Descriptive Cataloging with RDA
Edition Statement Now we’re going to move on to the edition statement. The edition statement is both a core element, meaning that it is required if present on the piece, and a transcribed element, meaning that we will record it using the wording on the piece. core element transcribed element

2 “2nd edition, revised and enlarged”
Title page Title page verso Here we have an edition statement on the title page that says this is the 2nd edition, revised and enlarged. Our edition statement is recorded using the wording on the piece. Let’s see what this looks like. “2nd edition, revised and enlarged”

3 RDA , Transcribe an edition statement as it appears on the source of information Record a designation of edition by applying the basic instructions at 2.5.1 245 _ _ An introduction to historical bibliography / ‡c by Norman E. Our edition statement is recorded in the 250 field, subfield a. Our edition statement is a transcribed element, so we use the wording on the title page.

4 REVISED AND ENLARGED BY
Title page Title page verso “SECOND EDITION REVISED AND ENLARGED BY W. TITHERLEY D.Sc., Ph.D., F.I.C. …” Here we have both an edition statement and a statement of responsibility for this particular edition: “Second edition revised and enlarged by A.W. Titherley.” Titherley was not responsible, as far as we know, for other editions. Only this one. So we will record this statement of responsibility together with our edition statement.

5 RDA , , D.1.2.3 Recording Statements of Responsibility Relating to the Edition Record statements of responsibility relating to the edition by applying the basic instructions at 2.4.1 Abridge a statement of responsibility only if this can be done without loss of essential information. Do not use a mark of omission (…) to indicate such an omission. D Precede the first statement of responsibility following an edition statement by a diagonal slash. 245 _ _ Two thousand years of science : ‡b the wonders of nature and their discoverers / ‡c by R.J. Harvey-Gibson. Second edition / ‡b revised and enlarged by A.W. Titherley. 264 □ 1 London : ‡b A. & C. Note that our edition statement follows the rules we saw earlier. Now, in the 250 field we record our statement of responsibility in subfield b, preceded with a space-slash-space, just as we did in our title field. Now, in this case the option to abridge the statement of responsibility was used. You will not be abridging anything when you do your in-class exercises or quizes because all the information presented on any title page or title page verso in those assignments will be essential.
