Parts of Speech

Objective I can identify the different parts of speech within sentences and understand their function within the sentence.

Overview Noun Verb Adjective Adverb Conjunction Interjection

Nouns A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea Articles always come before a noun An, a, and the Ex: The boy on the red bike hit a rock and fell off.

Verbs The action or “doing” word within a sentence Change tense in order to show time Ex: The team celebrated their win at the soccer tournament by dumping water on the coach.

Adjective Describe or modify nouns within a sentence. They answer the questions, “What kind?” or “How many?” Ex: The five tired children fell asleep on the way home from their aunt’s house.

Adverbs Used to describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs Adverbs answer the questions: How?, When?, Why?, Where?, Under what circumstances? Often end in -ly Examples of common adverbs Not, very, often, here, almost, always, never, there Ex: She ran quickly ran to her amazing mother and gave her a huge hug.

Conjunctions Words that connect other words, phrases, or sentences Remember FAN BOYS For And Nor But Or Yet So

Conjunctions Some conjunctions only connect clauses When, if, since, because, while, after, although, before Ex: She and I left early, but Matt decided to stay in order to talk to his friend Michael.

Interjections Words that show emotion or they could be “fillers” that do not serve any other function within the sentence Ex: Oh, I did not know you felt this way so please forgive me.
