Bike Safety Tips and Precautions for a SAFE and FUN bicycling experience this summer.

More and more people are on the road… 40% of all trips in the U.S. are less than 2 miles, making bicycling a feasible and FUN way to get to work. With increased interest in healthy, sustainable, and economic transportation options, it’s not surprising that, from 2000 to 2013, the number of bicycle commuters in the U.S. grew by more than 62 percent.

RULES OF THE ROAD 1. Follow the Law You don’t “own” the road just like those driving a vehicle don’t “own” the road. You have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers. Be courteous to others on the road. Obey traffic signals and stop signs. Ride in the same direction as traffic. Use the right most lane headed in the direction you are going, unless otherwise marked on the road.

2. Be Predictable Those driving can’t read your mind. Think ahead and make your intentions clear to everyone on the road. Ride in a straight line and don’t swerve between parked cars. Signal turns, and check behind you well before turning or changing lanes.

3. Be Conspicuous We all hate when a bike rider darts out in front of us or surprises us out of nowhere. Ride where people can see you and wear bright clothing. Use a front white light, red rear light, and reflectors when visibility is poor. Make eye contact with others and don’t ride on sidewalks.

BE ALERT and PAY ATTENTION!!! 4. Think Ahead Anticipate what drivers, pedestrians, and other people on bikes will do next. Watch for turning vehicles and ride outside the door zone of parked cars. In other words, be aware of people getting out of a parked car. Look out for debris, potholes, and other road hazards. Cross railroad tracks at right angles.

5. Ride Ready Check that your tires are sufficiently inflated, brakes are working, chains run smoothly, and quick release levers are closed. Carry tools and supplies that are appropriate for your ride. Take along a bottle of water as well. If stopping at a location on your ride for an extended amount of time having a lock is also advisable. And ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET.
