1 Safety is the Number 1 priority for Herron and Riverside.
Today we are going to review SAFETY before and after school. Safety is the Number 1 priority for Herron and Riverside.

2 Did you know that in just the last five years at Herron High School there have been four students and one teacher hit by a car while walking or riding a bicycle? Fortunately, they all survived, but please listen to these tips, hints, state laws and school rules so the next five years will be accident free for Herron High School!!

3 PEDESTRIAN SAFETY Always cross at the light.
Always obey light crossing signals. Take your earbuds out. Be aware of your surroundings. Stop and wait for emergency vehicles even if they are a few blocks away. Stay off your cell phone when crossing streets. Watch out for blind alleys.

4 PEDESTRIAN SAFETY What is the law in the state of Indiana?
Indiana Code Between intersections … pedestrians may not cross at any place except in a marked crosswalk. This is called jaywalking and it is illegal and unsafe! Don’t do it. Don’t do it when there is moving traffic, don’t do it when the traffic is stopped, just don’t do it. Indiana Code 2015 Sec. 10 A pedestrian may not cross intersections diagonally. Indiana Code If a sidewalk is provided, a pedestrian may not walk along and upon the street or roadway.

5 PEDESTRIAN SAFETY What is the law in the state of Indiana?
Indiana Code Pedestrian "walk" or "don't walk" control signals. A flashing or steady "walk" signal means a pedestrian facing the signal may proceed across the street in the direction of the signal and a person who drives a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to the pedestrian. A steady "don't walk" signal means a pedestrian may not start to cross the street in the direction of the signal. A pedestrian who has partially completed crossing on the "walk" signal shall proceed to a sidewalk or safety island while the "don't walk" signal is showing. A flashing "don't walk" signal means a pedestrian may not start to cross the street in the direction of the signal. A pedestrian who has already started to cross on the "walk" signal shall proceed to a sidewalk or safety island. If a countdown pedestrian signal indication is also shown, a pedestrian may cross if the pedestrian is able to proceed to the sidewalk or safety island by the time the steady "don't walk" signal is shown. You are responsible for knowing Indiana law. Don’t break the law. Keep yourself and others safe.

6 BICYCLE SAFETY When you ride a bike you must obey the same traffic laws as operating a vehicle. Wear a helmet. Always obey light crossing signals. Take your earbuds out. 10 PARKING ON CAMPUS If you drive to school, please park on campus.
Our neighbors on Talbott and other streets do not have enough parking spaces. Take a moment and think about it: You live on Talbott, you come home with three bags of groceries and you have to park two or more blocks away because a Herron student has parked in front of your house. Not cool. You can help by parking in our lot! Be a good neighbor! Permits applications available from your Advisory teacher now.

11 CLOSED CAMPUS – 5TH PERIOD
Herron High School has a closed campus. What does this mean? You may not leave campus without parental permission. You may not leave campus and return to campus before or after school. Once you are on campus you must stay on campus. 5th Period is designed to keep you safe! Herron staff and faculty cannot supervise you outside after 4:15 p.m. All students must return to the building by 4:15 p.m. Students who delay returning to the building or who loitering close by will be logged.

12 Thank you for following Indiana law and Herron rules
to keep yourself and others safe. Have a great day.
