Because mopeds are small and maneuverable, they can surprise motorists. Always signal well in advance before making a turn or lane change.

You may encounter bicycles and mopeds almost anywhere you drive.

Use the IPDE Process to actively search for bicycles and mopeds. Scan widely enough to include the sides of the roadways.

Most children do not look for traffic, or know and understand traffic laws.
Some children are not able to control their bicycles well.

Give bicycle and moped riders extra space whenever possible.
Respect their need when they use a whole lane.

11. Avoid using your horn, which can startle riders and cause them to lose control.
Allow extra time for them to pass through intersections.
Use low-beam headlights at night when mopeds and bicycles are nearby.
Some cities and towns have lanes that are reserved for bicycles. Never park or drive in a marked bicycle lane.

12. Passing Do not pass a bicycle if oncoming traffic is near.
When it is safe to pass, leave at least one half lane between your vehicle and the bicycle.

13. Turning
Do not make a quick right turn in front of a bicycle or moped; the rider may not have enough time or space to avoid you.
If you don’t have space to pass and safely turn right, slow down and let the cyclist pass through the intersection before you.

Check for mopeds and cyclists all around you when backing out of a driveway, parking space, or side street that has line-of-sight restrictions.

Before opening your door, check your rear zones for bicyclists.
Then open your doors carefully, and check for riders again.
