2 Left shoulder head check
You want to pull away from the curb. You have signaled and you are checking this outside mirror. After this car passes, what must you still do? Develop this habit to cover the blind spot Why should you do this? STOP and THINK Left shoulder head check

3 What should you do as you proceed through it?
At this intersection they stop, we do not. What should you do as you proceed through it? Develop the habit of checking every intersection. “T” crashes from side impacts kill more people than head-on collisions STOP and THINK EASE OFF THE GAS, COVER THE BRAKE and CHECK IT ANYWAY. Expect people to run stop signs

4 STOP and THINK No, that is a school sign!
We are at a stop sign intending to turn left, does that van have to stop at the intersection? You might have pulled out…crash! Each shape has a special meaning. What if you thought it was a stop sign? STOP and THINK No, that is a school sign!

5 What should you be noticing in this scene?
Get in the habit of looking in, around and beneath parked vehicles. SOMEONE STANDING ON OTHER SIDE OF PICK-UP TRUCK!

6 Stop and wait! You want to turn right, what are you concerned about? What will you do here?

7 Will you now tap your horn to alert this bicycle rider ?
Probably his left shoulder causing the bicycle to drift to the _____. STOP and THINK What shoulder might the cyclist look over if he heard your horn blast? left into your path No, you’re too close. Will you now tap your horn to alert this bicycle rider ?

8 If this parked car was here, what would you anticipate?
Same thing, the cyclist would move left. If this parked car was here, what would you anticipate?

9 Give 2 reasons why you should be slowing down?
Some 4 lane roads (multilane) are divided, some are not. Get in habit of looking through their back window Traffic light ahead Brakes lights on second vehicle ahead . . . No brake lights on this vehicle Give 2 reasons why you should be slowing down?

10 You’re traveling at 45 mph
You’re traveling at 45 mph. Give one reason why should you maintain your position here, or drop back a little? 1) You would lose your 3 second following distance. 2) By moving up your various space cushions would be lost. 3) Traffic light ahead.

11 No, they still have the red light.
You want to turn left - the arrow just appeared, will you have to yield to on-coming traffic (the truck) before you make your left turn? No, they still have the red light. This is called a protected turn.

12 On this road you might now normally consider signaling for a right turn at the light.
But, why should you delay your signal in this situation? Cars on right in might pull out in front of you, misinterpreting your signal.

13 Vehicles behind it attempting to change lanes.
This car at the intersection is waiting to turn left, what should you be predicting?

14 What will happen when the arrow turns-off?
on-coming cars will begin proceeding Will the green arrow stay on? You are moving in the left turn lane, what are you thinking about as you get closer to your turn?

15 What must you do in this situation?
One of the most important signs along the road. One of the few signs directing you to do something rather than just being warned. What must you do in this situation? Lane change, it’s becoming a 2 lane road

16 You’re going straight at this intersection, what have you identified and what should you do?
The right lane is ending, check to see if someone will be passing you on the right.

17 - same intersection Continue checking for additional cars that might be passing. (right shoulder head check)

18 YES…there is no one on the side street to trip the light sensors.
Will this traffic light probably stay green?

19 …again use the shoulder
Don’t over react. Usually only ¼ turn of the steering is necessary Also, if possible keep the left tires on the pavement. If you have to swerve to the right to avoid a head-on How much should you turn the steering wheel? STOP and THINK …again use the shoulder If a vehicle began passing that truck coming right at you, what would you do?

20 Like the bus in the intersection, you want to turn left…

21 …will you now follow this bus and complete your turn?
Why not? The arrow is not on and you have poor visibility. …will you now follow this bus and complete your turn? No !

22 500 300 The right white edge line.
Bright lights must be dimmed _______feet before meeting an on-coming vehicle or ______feet before passing a vehicle. 500 300 The right white edge line. If on-coming cars are blinding you with their bright lights, where should you look to avoid the direct, bright glare?

23 Also, what is not allowed at
this intersection? NO TURN ON RED Especially watch for pedestrians if turning right they have the right of way if they have are still in the crosswalk. Watch for them!

24 What should you do before pulling out into this street? When exiting an city alley, first stop…then keep foot over the brake when easing up toward the street looking for pedestrians who may not be looking your way!

25 Many pedestrians will be distracted or pre-occupied

26 This vehicle is signaling a right turn, what are you anticipating?
This vehicle may attempt a lane change as you are approaching its blind spot.

27 Change lanes to the LEFT SIDE
You are on a one way street. Which side of the street must you be on for a left turn at the stop sign?

28 You predict a conflict with this merger
You predict a conflict with this merger What should you do to avoid the conflict? Change lanes or brake.

29 (better stay back in case this occurs)
You notice the merger and this car will have a conflict. In addition, the van is slowing to exit. What is your concern? The vehicle to our right may lane change into our lane as we approach it’s blind spot. (better stay back in case this occurs)

30 The trucker may not be able to stop if this car suddenly slowed down
The trucker may not be able to stop if this car suddenly slowed down. You could be crushed! What is a danger of you passing this truck and then changing lanes in front of it?
